Corey Perry scored twice as the Anaheim Ducks coasted to a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators before a sellout crowd of 17,177 at Honda Center. |
The Ducks (4-1) captured their fourth in a row and handed the Senators (1-2-2) their second straight setback. Anaheim set a club mark for shots on goal, recording 56 and breaking the previous mark of 54 set against the Edmonton Oilers on March 27, 2009.
Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller turned back 30 shots, while Ottawa’s Robin Lehner finished with 45 saves.
The record-setting offensive performance suggested the Ducks’ mightiest days could be right in front of them.
Captain Ryan Getzlaf and Nick Bonino also scored for the Ducks, who were Mighty again on a throwback night celebrating the 20th anniversary of the franchise’s 1993 debut. Wearing their colorful original jerseys, the Ducks racked up a franchise-record 56 shots against the Senators, who lost their fourth straight.
Anaheim has fielded its share of eye-catching teams over the past two decades, but these Ducks are confident they could be as good as any of them after outscoring their last four opponents 17-6.
‘’That’s the way we want to play,’’ Perry said. ‘’We want to put as many pucks on the net as possible. Good things happen when you do that. If we start like that, we’re going to be successful. We’re going to play that quick game, we’re going to forecheck, and get better every single game.’’
Elsewhere, a defensive clampdown helped the Winnipeg Jets reverse their fortunes. The Jets allowed just 24 shots to the New Jersey Devils in a 3-0 win Sunday night at the MTS Centre.
Winnipeg goalie Al Montoya was sharp while recording the shutout in his first action of the season.
In the moments before Winnipeg left wing Evander Kane opened the scoring early in the second period, Montoya made a pad save on Devils right winger Michael Ryder during a New Jersey five-on-three power-play.
Rob Klinkhammer scored his first two goals of the season as the Phoenix Coyotes defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 at PNC Arena, winning their third game in a row.
Klinkhammer’s tiebreaking goal came 22 seconds into the third period, assisted by Zbynek Michalek and goalie Mike Smith.
The Coyotes, wrapping up a five-game road trip, also received goals from Mikkel Boedker, Lauri Korpikoski and Shane Doan. In goal, Smith made 31 saves.
Backup goalie Ben Scrivens made his first start of the season and earned a shutout as the Los Angeles Kings blanked the Florida Panthers 3-0 at the BB&T Center.
The Kings won their third straight game—including two in a row on the road - and improved to 4-2 overall.
