Friends and well-wishers recalled the contributions of the late Ganesh Srinivasan to the Indian community in Qatar for more than three-and-a-half decades. Srinivasan, 58, died after a heart attack at his home in Doha on September 7. The funeral was held in Bangalore in southern India on Tuesday.A meeting was held on Tuesday at the Indian Cultural Centre which was attended among others by the deputy head of the Indian embassy P S Sasikumar and representatives of various Indian organisations, members of the community, including former Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF) chief Dr Mohan Thomas.They recalled their long association with Srinivasan, whose sudden death, they said, was a big loss to the Indian community.Srinivasan, who was the founder president of the Indian Business Promotion Network (IBPN), was associated with the activities of the ICBF and ICC in various capacities.Besides Dr Thomas, others who spoke at the meeting included ICC president Tarun Kumar Basu, former ICBF president Nilangshu Dey, IBPN president Azeem Abbas, ICBF president Kareem Abdulla, former ICC president M I Farid, Mohamed Easa of Ali International Trading, IBPN deputy president N V Khader, Karnataka Sangha president Deepak Shetty, entrepreneur V S Narayanan and Indian Women’s Association president Ushus Andrews.Sasikumar read out Indian Ambassador Sanjiv Arora’s condolence message at the meeting.Arora said: “My family and I, and all my colleagues at the embassy share the feelings of shock, disbelief and profound grief within our community at the sudden demise of Ganesh Srinivasan, a long-time and well-known resident of Doha, and a dedicated, active and popular leader of the Indian community in Qatar. We convey our deepest condolences to Ganesh’s wife Vidya, their children Pooja and Rohit, and the entire family.”He said: “I had the privilege and pleasure of meeting Ganesh shortly after coming to Doha a year ago, and interacting with him on many occasions. I was always touched by his simplicity, friendliness and keenness to help others. Ganesh was truly a very kind and noble human being, and combined the best qualities of head and heart. “When I learnt about this tragedy early in the morning on September 8, I was shocked and could not believe it. I had last met Ganesh at ICBF’s sports tournament during this Ramadan and as always, he was full of positive energy - smiling, laughing, enthusiastic and encouraging and supporting the players and organisers without saying much!”He said: “We, at the embassy of India, join our larger community in expressing our gratitude for all that Ganesh did for these organisations and other laudable initiatives in which he was actively involved.“Ganesh will be deeply missed by all those who knew him or ever met him.” ICC cultural secretary V Gopinath co-ordinated the meeting.
