The Qatar Centre for Organ Donation and Transplantation at the Hamad General Hospital is holding organ donation awareness drives across major malls, hypermarkets and corporations in an effort to encourage more residents to become living donors for organs such as kidneys and parts of the liver as well as to sign up for the deceased organ donors scheme. During the campaign being held throughout Ramadan at various locations including a number of mosques and private companies, HMC staff were seen educating passers-by about the importance of donating an organ.The staff have been deployed to about 20 sites in different malls and community gatherings across the country between 7-11pm to create awareness about organ donation.Residents were also being encouraged to donate blood during the campaign.The drive was expected to assist the country to achieve its aim of reaching self-sufficiency in organ donation.During the campaign, which will continue for 10 days after the fasting month, residents are also be encouraged to donate organs for their sick relatives on waiting list for organ transplant.There are two types of organ donation: deceased and live organ donors.“Our aim with the campaign is to create awareness about organ donation and our services at HMC, which is of highest standards, in order to deter patients from travelling abroad for organ transplantation,” Organ Donation Centre director Dr Riad Fadhil had said.
