Total Research Centre-Qatar (TRC-Q) has been instrumental in organisng several high-level training programmes for Qatar Petroleum (QP), Qatargas and Dolphin Energy since the beginning of the year. After the first training in reservoir engineering, solar energy, corrosion and air quality, Total continued its ambitious programme and held another technical course last month on seismic reservoir characterisation. This course was delivered by Jean-Luc Piazza, an expert in seismic reservoir characterisation from Total’s headquarters in Paris. The technical training was a big success, having been attended by numerous employees from QP, Qatargas and Dolphin Energy.TRC-Q director Philippe Julien said: “Training is the natural continuation of research. When you develop an expertise, you want to share it with your partners. These training courses are provided by internationally-recognised technical experts from Total and are quite interactive. A large part of the time is dedicated to discussions between the lecturers and the participants. Discussing hi-tech subjects is not only a way to explain advanced technologies, but also to discuss practical problems and evaluate the interest of new ideas”. “These courses are aimed to reinforce our ties and share our technical knowledge with our partners in Qatar - Qatar Petroleum, Qatargas and Dolphin Energy,” said Stéphane Michel, managing director, Total E&P Qatar.Seismic reservoir characterisation has become an established discipline in geophysics. A geophysicist is able to provide a “seismic photograph” of the earth’s interior, which is mandatory for exploring and producing hydrocarbons. The principle is the same as the one of a “medical imaging echography”, which aims at imaging an unborn baby.
