Four journalism students from Northwestern University in Qatar traveled to Rio de Janeiro this summer to examine how Brazil’s second largest city is recovering from rapid urbanisation, focusing on how the local government deals with the mountains of garbage produced by its more than 6mn inhabitants. The students spent two weeks shooting footage for a documentary about the people working at Gericino, the last operating garbage dump in the city. The documentary is currently in post-production and is scheduled to be screened this fall.
