The land required for the runway and passenger terminals is already in KIAL’s possession (1,278 acres) and another 732 acres is being acquired.KIAL has shortlisted seven companies - GMR Infrastructure, Sanjoy Gammons, Larson and Toubro, TAV-Essar, EKO-Unity, OJSC Sibmost-Gayatri and ITD Cementation India- for awarding engineering, procurement and construction contracts. When completed, the Kannur airport would be the fourth international airport in the state after Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. Another intentional airport is coming up in the central Kerala town of Aranmula, in which the state will hold a 10% stake. Babu pointed out that there would the project is unlikely to face a funds crunch as the 51% shares allotted to the government and the entities it has a control or influence on are already fully subscribed. The shares offered to the public in small lots will, however, take time to complete subscription since public issue is not allowed.“We have so far received 2,500 applications, mostly from NRKs, and the share certificates are being issued,” said Babu, who is also one of the directors of both the KIAL and CIAL. “We are not issuing bulk shares to individuals now,” the minister told Gulf Times.
