Call to involve citizens in enforcing road safety rules
There should be a system wherein motorists can photograph errant drivers and inform the Traffic Department, a Qatari citizen has told local Arabic daily Arrayah.
“Such a social action is needed to complement the official efforts to enforce road safety,” he explained while responding to a survey.
Other citizens and experts told the daily that speeding and distraction on account of talking on the mobile phone are among the main causes of majority of traffic accidents.
Using the mobile while driving is dangerous than speeding, some said. They also warned about the dangers posed by the speed breakers built in front of residences in violation of specifications and standards.
Motorists who fail to use the turn signals have been blamed for as many as 70% of accidents. Deep excavations left unfilled or uncovered without any warning signs are dangerous. Good roads also encourage speeding, some felt.
Manager of a driving school said he would blame only the irresponsible behaviour of some motorists for causing accidents.
