The Central Municipal Council (CMC) members yesterday welcomed a suggestion by chairman Saud al-Hinzab to establish exclusive health clubs for people with special needs.

Al-Hinzab recalled that he had been approached by some special needs individuals who voiced their difficulties in getting access to health clubs and sports clubs around the country. Moreover, some of them get embarrassed when practising sports alongside normal people.

CMC vice-chairman Jassim al-Malki said that the issue is very important and the council should take it up seriously to give special needs people opportunities to practise sports in a hassle-free manner as the leadership of the country encourages sports for all. Eventually, the topic was referred to the CMC Service and Utility Committee for further studies and recommendations.

Regarding enforcement of the law for shifting labour accommodations from residential areas, CMC member Mohamed al-Athba suggested a clear strategy ought to be adopted by the authorities concerned to implement the law. Labour accommodations are still not removed from some residential areas.

Al-Malki observed that that practically, it is very difficult to implement the relevant law as thousands of workers enter the country on daily basis for a large number of development projects. Further, all the industrial areas have become overcrowded and even many farms stand transformed into labour accommodation.

The member was of the view that the process has to be flexible and people have to more patient and tolerant until effective alternatives become available.

CMC members renewed their demands that executive entities in the country involve them in the various phases of development projects scheduled in their respective constituencies, at least by keeping them informed.

Dr Mohamed al-Maslamani said the recently launched project of Qatar Development Bank in co-operation with the Ministry of Business and Trade and the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning (MMUP), regarding the development of the neighbourhood markets should have involved the CMC.

The CMC member suggested that MMUP should provide the council with detailed plans of the various phases of the project, for which the Council had issued many recommendations.

“The Council should be an integral part of the development process and ought to be consulted before the project is implemented,” he added.

He also thanked HH the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani for his great achievements for the country.
