British embassy hosts Qatar Olympic team

The British Embassy in Doha recently hosted a reception ceremony in honour of the Qatari delegation participating in the 30th Summer Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in London from July 27 to August 12.The reception ceremony was attended by British Ambassador Michael O’Neill and Meshaal Nasser al-Khalifa, the QOC assistant secretary general for Administrative Support. Among those who attended were members of the British Embassy as well as Khaleel al-Jaber, Director of the QOC Sports Affairs Department and members of Qatar’s delegation to the London Olympic Games. The British Ambassador, Michael O’Neill, said: “I am delighted to be here today with the Qatar Olympic Committee delegation who will soon travel to London for the Olympic Games.“As we approach the start of the Games, we particularly look forward to welcoming the Qatari Olympic team to London and wish them the best of luck for the Games. It’s pleasing to see that the Qatari delegation includes four female athletes for the first time.”‘We’re very proud of the preparations and legacy planning for the Games, including the new athletics stadium, the stunning aquatics centre and the innovative design of the Orbit Tower, the Copper Box, the Basketball Arena and the Velodrome. The new Olympic Park is an outstanding example of design and engineering, and the Olympic Park Legacy Company will look after the Olympic Park site after 2012. We are very pleased that the State of Qatar will play a role in this through its investment in the Athletes’ Village.

“Britain is set to host a fantastic Olympic and Paralympic Games and we hope that many of our Qatari friends will join us in welcoming thousands of athletes from all over the world,” the ambassador concluded.Meshaal al-Khalifa said: “It is my great pleasure to warmly welcome you on this happy occasion. I am taking this opportunity to thank the British Ambassador to Qatar, Michael O’Neill for inviting us and Qatar’s delegation to the London 2012 Olympic Games to attend this ceremony. Such an invitation reflects the solid and friendly relations between Qatar and UK.”Khaleel al-Jaber, head of Qatar’s Administrative Delegation, highlighted the importance of participation in such an important event. He said that the Qatari delegation includes very talented athletes.
