ExxonMobil recently held its annual high school summer programme, marking the third year the company has hosted students from Omar Bin Al Khattab Independent High School, Al Bayan Independent High School and, for the first time, Qatar Academy.“The purpose of this programme is to familiarise outstanding Qatari high school students with the energy sector at a critical time in their education,” said Abdullatif al-Naemi, ExxonMobil’s National Development Manager. “From their experience at ExxonMobil, we hope these students will be more encouraged to explore potential career opportunities in areas such as science and engineering. We also want Qatar’s youth to have a better understanding of how their country’s natural resources are developed given the importance this industry plays as we move toward the Qatar National Vision 2030.”Over the course of the programme, the students interacted with various departments within ExxonMobil, shadowing subject matter experts and working on projects based on the students’ interests. “It was more about gaining experience than to decide which career path to pursue,” said Sultan al-Kaabi, a student from Qatar Academy. “It’s an amazing opportunity for students to gain exposure to such a top, professional, world-class organisations, and to learn about various aspects of the oil and gas industry.” The students also enjoyed field trips to Ras Laffan Industrial City, where they toured natural gas processing facilities, and to ExxonMobil Research Qatar’s facilities at the Qatar Science and Technology Park. Here they stepped inside a 3D immersive environment that simulates actual work scenarios such as being onboard an LNG ship, or working in production and processing facilities. The students also explored ExxonMobil’s environmental research lab where scientists are studying marine organisms native to the Arabian Gulf. At the conclusion of the programme, participants received a certificate of completion in a ceremony presided over by the President and General Manager of ExxonMobil Qatar, Bart Cahir, and Abdullatif al-Naemi.
