By Ayman Adly /Staff ReporterThe seventh Conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers GCC (IEEE GCC) will be held in Qatar for the first time during November 17- 20 at Qatar National Convention Centre, the organising committee said yesterday. The 7th IEEE GCC Conference and Exhibition, organised by Qatar Society of Engineers (QSE), adopts the theme “Towards improving the quality of life” and is held under the patronage of HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani. Engineer Hassan al-Marzoqi, QSE secretary general, pointed out that the conference would discuss a variety of important topics in the fields of electricity, electronics and communication. He said that the participating delegations include chairmen and CEOs of international and regional organisations, guests and dignitaries and a wide participation from those in related industries. Engineer Yaqub al-Mulla, chairman of IEEE GCC, said that the conference would be a great platform for exchange of information and experience among specialists, which would help in advancing technology for easing the life of people. It would also be a good opportunity to introduce new innovations and research papers. Engineer Mohamed Ibrahim al-Muhannadi, chairman of the organising committee of IEEE GCC, explained that the conference is scheduled to focus on six main topics: Power systems and energy, computing and information technology, industrial technology applications, communication and signal processing, electronics and instrumentations and engineering education and development. Dr Nasser al-Emadi, chairman of the technical committee, explained that IEEE GCC includes tutorials, keynote speeches, speeches, paper sessions, and plenary sessions with special focus on the role of women in engineering and other sessions for the students of engineering and other potential students who consider the subject for future studies. The keynote speakers scheduled for the event include: professor Mohamed Chariet, director of a research centre at Montreal-Canada, and professor Leopoldo Gracia Franquelo from the University of Saville, Spain, among other distinguished scientists. There are also confirmed participations from a large number of countries from around the world including China, Egypt, France, UK, USA and India. Engineer Ahmed al-Jolo, QSE chairman, stressed that the organisation of the conference is expected to be of great success and that the event is of great importance for the development of local engineers and professionals in the field. Supporting companies and organisations for the event include Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Foundation, ictQATAR and Qatar Electricity and Water Company. However, the organising committee is still in the process of negotiations to have more supporters giving them special incentives at the accompanying exhibition. The exhibition is intended to give companies, consulting firms, research and academic organisations and government entities a platform to display their activities, services and products in the related fields. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th IEEE GCC were held in Bahrain in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 consecutively. The 5th was held in Kuwait in 2009 and the 6th was held in UAE in 2011. IEEE has more than 425,000 members from more than 160 countries with above 50% of them from outside USA. It has sponsored more than 1, 300 conferences in 80 countries.
