PICTURE: Shaji KayamkulamAuto Sport, the motorsport and automobile magazine established in 1989 in Dubai, is moving to Qatar to cater to, what it calls, a “virgin” market. The key people of the group launched the magazine at a glittering party early in the week at the Ocean Pearl restaurant. The publisher has planned to move the head office to Qatar.“The magazine was established in 1989 in Dubai and it is distributed across the region. But now our head office will be here. Our main team is here in Qatar. So now from Qatar, we will go pan-Arab,” said Hani Joudi, publisher and editor-in-chief of the magazine.“Qatar is a virgin market. And we believe it needs services. Apart from the construction, building, it also needs media. Our experience says that the media here is weak. It needs to be like Dubai. It needs to be professional like in Dubai,” he added. Along with Joudi, present at the launch from the company was Mohamed al-Khayat, the chairman.“He (al-Khayat) is the winner of the championship in Syria. He does drifting, racing. He does it like a hobby. On the other hand, I test drive in the desert,” Joudi said about the team’s experience. With a team of six people in Qatar, and “reporters everywhere”, Joudi said: “In Auto Sport, we not only want to cover motorsport but everything including automobiles. There are some magazines here. But they are not professional. Like they don’t have experience in how to do a test drive.”He added: “The development in this market is very slow and needs to be very active. This is what we believe. I have lived in Dubai for around 15 years and I have seen the way they have grown.”
