Remote-controlled-car (RC) racing is  becoming popular in Qatar with different nationalities visiting the newly-built race track at the Aspire Zone.

Jay Patigas, president of the Qatar Remote Control Racing Group (QRCRG), told Gulf Times that their club race attracted a number of RC enthusiasts every Friday.

“Some Lebanese and British nationals bring their own remote-controlled cars and race with us. Many Filipinos are also joining,” said Patigas, who has been designated as track supervisor by Aspire.

Under a year-long programme, he is planning to hold a series of races and a major competition. This, he said, would encourage more members and participants to become active in RC racing. “But like other passions, it should be given ample time and dedication,” he said.

Called as “community try”, QRCRG offers free trial to those who do not have the cars yet but want to feel how it is to drive (or control) an RC car.

“They can borrow and try our cars. If they like to pursue RC racing then that is the time they start buying their cars,” he said.

The group recently held a race at the new track with its officers and members taking part. Spectators were delighted with the speed and  performance of each car.

Patigas disclosed that he had received an invitation from the Far East Model Car Association (Femca), asking him to join a race in China this year. It is one of the biggest remote-controlled car organisations in Asia. Countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and many others join its races.

Some international RC events are  held in Africa, Europe and the US.

Most of the brand new 1/8th buggy style cars cost between QR3,000 to QR5,000 but some racers sell second-hand units and spare parts.

Patigas described  RC car racing as an “exciting and a fun hobby” for all ages. “If you are enjoying watching the race, you will enjoy more when you have your own car and competing against other racers.”

Since they already have a permanent place to race, QRCRG is set to hold another competition next month at Aspire.
