Arab film analyst Alaa Karkouti will host a workshop on short filmmaking in Doha next week.The two-hour workshop, supported by Qatari director Jassim al-Romaihi and Mohamed Rezwan and the Doha Film Institute (DFI), will be held at the DFI on May 28 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. The workshop will outline how to successfully submit a film for Tropfest Arabia 2012. The aim of Tropfest Arabia is to contribute to the development of the Arab film industry by providing an opportunity for the region’s filmmakers to bring their short films to the community. The second edition of Tropfest Arabia will take place in Abu Dhabi in October 2012.Jassima al-Romaihi recently graduated from Northwestern, where he made many short films. He works to incorporate aspects of the Arab heritage into all his works. Mohamed Rezwan al-Islam directed Heartbeat, A-Flat; and El Barr. Jassim and Mohamed also co-directed a short film called A Falcon, A Revolution, which screened during the Doha Tribeca Film Festival 2011 and Gulf Film Festival 2012. The workshop will cover the short filmmaking process and expose participants to submissions from Tropfest Arabia 2011 as well as the Tropfest Arabia signature item, which this year is ‘2’ and must be used as a creative part of all Tropfest Arabia submissions. It will also give participants the opportunity to raise questions and gain further insight into the Tropfest Arabia festival, and the role that short films are increasingly playing in the region’s rapidly growing media industry.In order to be eligible to participate in the Tropfest Arabia workshops and submit a film entry, participants must be a citizen of the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region.
