Bus service needs to be improved
Dear Sir,
I feel that the bus service in Qatar needs to be improved. A good public transport service will help reduce the number of cars on Doha’s streets, easing traffic congestion and cutting down on pollution.
To start with, Qatar’s’ public transport company, Mowasalat, should launch services linking all main roads and important landmarks, shopping malls and the airport in Doha.
Services linking two locations, without crossing the entire city, should also be considered.
Introduction of bus passes for a day, a week and a month with campaigns to promote them will find favour with commuters.
Mowasalat should also improve reliability and punctuality of the service.
As part of a promotion, Mowasalat may provide the service at a reduced rate for a few months.

Time to clean up building rooftops

The Central Municipal Council’s call to clean up the roofs of buildings must be welcomed by all residents (April 3).
As CMC vice-chairman Jassim al-Malki said these places had become a spot for dumping garbage and are being used to store old furniture, toys, equipment, wires, batteries, tyres, wood, paints and other materials, which can easily catch fire during the summer.
The rooftop of the building where I live, for instance, contains at least five discarded room air-conditioners, three or four broken-down tables and chairs, two worn-out carpets and several bundles of old newspapers. These have been left there by both former and present tenants.
My periodical attempts to clear the mess have been with resistance from other tenants who see the rooftop as an easy place to dump anything they don’t want but which they would not like to discard entirely. They don’t seem to realise the fire hazard these things pose.
The municipal council, one hopes, will make it mandatory for residents of buildings to keep their buildings clean and neat.
