The Qatar chapter of the Institution of Engineers (India, IEI) has conducted debates on environmental topics for Indian schools in Doha.Indian schools comprising Birla Public School (BPS), Delhi Public School (DPS), Doha Modern Indian school (DMIS), Ideal Indian School (IIS), MES Indian School, and the host Shantiniketan Indian School (SIS) participated in the debates.The debating event was the second leg of the Project 5S (School Students Struggle for Sustainability and to Save Environment).Project 5S is a year-long environmental project for Indian schools in Doha, in which schools are competing for the Ambassador’s Rolling Trophy and the IEI Rolling Trophy.The programme of the competition is divided into three legs with the final leg slated for November. The three keenly-contested debates between the six Indian schools were adjudicated by the panel of judges comprising Milaan Arun, Susan Mathews, S Kumar Naidu, and Safeer Azeez.In the first debate “Sustainability vs Development,” DMIS led the IIS by four points and in the second debate on “Which is more threatening to mankind – depleting natural resources or global warming,” BPS scored three points more than MES Indian.In the final debate on “Whose responsibility it is to overcome the environmental concerns – Government v/s Individual” SIS tied with DMIS.Honorary chairman Debashish Roy welcomed the gathering and presented certificates of participation to students, while former honorary chairman Animesh Sarkar announced the results.Honorary treasurer and the programme project manager Dr Abdul Hameed Pathiyil conducted and compered the proceedings of the evening.Past honorary secretary Seenu Pillai conducted the debate competition and honorary joint secretary Manoj Kulushtra proposed the vote of thanks.
