Indian expatriate forum Samanvayam is organising ‘Sopanam 2012,’ a fusion instrumental recital by veena exponent Rajhesh Vaidhya on June 8 at Doha Cinema.The acclaimed artiste will render popular songs from Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and Kannada. He is the son of mridangam and ghatam maestro K M Vaidyanathan. Vaidhya, who trained under carnatic veena maestro S Chitti Babu, is renowned for his fast string work and the use of electric and amplified strings. A contributor of the noted international album Playing for Change, he has performed with the Switzerland-based contemporary dance troupe Bejart ballet.Vaidhya, who gives concerts around the world, last performed in Doha in 2007. In the June 8 concert, Vaidhya will be accompanied by well-known and accomplished artistes Mohanraman (on mridangam), Chaandrajith (tabla), N Subramanian (ghatam), Nivas K Prasanna (piano) and Tenkasi H Paramasivam (kanjira).The music programme will be followed by a performance of Chakyarkoothu, a popular traditional art form from Kerala, by Kalamandalam Raman Chakyar.Chakyar retired as a professor of art at Kalamandalam, the famous deemed university for art and culture.
