With Qatar recording per capita water usage of 216cu m in 2012, the highest in the world, Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) president HE Essa bin Hilal al-Kuwari has called upon everyone to “think sustainability and save water for the coming generations”.

The statement was issue ahead of Arab Water Day, which will be celebrated today under the theme “Water is our life and the future of our generations, let’s think sustainability”.

To mark the occasion, Kahramaa has reiterated its commitment to its mission that calls for the provision of affordable and high-quality electricity and water services for customers in keeping with the highest international standards, according to the statement.

Kahramaa, the statement says, recognises the key role water plays in the development of Qatar.

“It is the main component in our bid to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030. The overarching aim is to ensure sustainable development and better living for one generation after another,” it adds.

“Provision of water is a national and humanitarian responsibility … besides, it is a big challenge due to the scarcity of fresh water resources in the region,” says the statement. “We have to contribute to the objectives of the National Campaign for Conservation and Efficient Use of Water and Electricity, Tarsheed 2012-2016. Tarsheed aims to reduce water consumption by 35%.”
