More than 6,000 Mowasalat staffers  held massive celebrations to coincide with the National Sport Day at the company’s sprawling Karwa township yesterday.As part of its activities, the transport company’s sports committee held a number of events, of which the main highlight was a 3km mass race, participated by a large number of its workers.Other events included a relay and a friendly basketball match. Some entertainment events were also held for the families and children of the company employees.Speaking at the gathering, Mowasalat chairman and managing director Jassim Saif al-Sulaiti said, “Celebrating the National Sport Day is part of the state’s successful path led by His Highness the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.” He said hosting sports events in Qatar would contribute significantly to the building of infrastructure and in attracting investors for major projects. The volume of projects developed on account of such major events, including the Fifa World Cup 2022, is driving the accelerated growth of Qatar’s economy, said al-Sulaiti.Such developments also maximise the role of the private sector, benefits all citizens, helps spread sports culture among various age-groups and brings new developments that help enhance Qatar’s image as a major sport venue at the international level, he said. Also speaking, the company’s Executive Director Ahmed Bu Sherbak al-Mansoori said, “The decree issued by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to celebrate the National Sport Day is a historical decision. It underlines the state’s commitment to promote sport activities after it has become become the capital of sport in the Middle East, thanks to the continuous  support of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.Later, Mowasalat Business Development Director Nasser al-Khanji expressed his happiness  at the large scale participation of the company’s employees in the Sport Day activities. They included recreational and events such as fitness exercises, walking, basketball and running.While lauding the winners at the day’s celebrations, al-Khanji told them to pursue their sporting aspirations, making use of the facilities developed by the company in its township. “Sport Day motivates all citizens and residents in Qatar to practise sport and this will have a positive impact on individual productivity and health in general,” added al-Khanji. At the meeting, the company officials announced the launch of its annual tournament the “Chairman’s Cup” which is being held under the patronage of Jassim Saif al-Sulaiti.
