The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) yesterday unveiled the official mascot of this year’s National Sport Day which will be held tomorrow.

The committee chose two bunnies, Khazaz and Adina, to represent this year’s event, which is held on the Tuesday of the second week of February of each year.

The mascot’s designer, Majid al-Maadeed, said he was happy to have  played a role in the National Sport Day. He said that Olympic Committee secretary-general HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman al-Thani was keen that the mascot of the Sport Day reflected the heritage of Qatar and its identity. He said wild bunnies inhabiting the Qatari desert were behind the design’s inspiration.

The wild rabbit has never been used as a mascot for any previous sports competitions in Qatar. The committee plans a range of promotional events for children during the Sports Day.

Meanwhile, Qatar Football Association (QFA) and Qatar Shell have announced they will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest ever five-a-side football match in celebration of the Sport Day.

The game which is open to the general public will kick off at 9am at Aspire Zone and is expected to run continuously for 10 hours, or until the record of 464 players, which was set in the UK in 2012 is broken. Guinness World Records officials will be in attendance to oversee the record attempt from start to finish
