Doha: Local footballers are battling it out at the Al Markhiya Sports Club, as the 2013 Community Football Tournament gets into full swing in Doha.
Qatar Airways is proudly supporting the event, which is organised jointly by the Qatar Stars League and the Qatar Cancer Society.
Eighteen teams comprising different nationalities are competing in the knock-out event, which runs until February 19. Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar al-Baker said the airline was delighted to see the tournament get off to a great start.
“As we approach National Sport Day next week and look forward to a year of top-class international sporting events in Doha, it’s fantastic to see our local sporting talent coming together to compete and celebrate the great sport of football,” he said.
“So far the matches have been extremely competitive, with local teams of different backgrounds and cultures taking to the field in highly charged games.
“We certainly look forward to enjoying all the football action and a very exciting build-up to the grand final match which will be held on Tuesday February 19 at Al Saad Stadium during a key Qatar Stars League match,” added al-Baker. He congratulated Chairman of Qatar Cancer Society Dr Khalid Bin Jaber al-Thani and Chief Qatar Stars League Commercial Officer Abdulrahman al-Dosari for organising the tournament and ensuring its success.
