Malta will be opening an embassy in Doha, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has said.Speaking after the signing of a series of agreements with Qatar on Tuesday afternoon, which covered education, health, employment and the economy, Gonzi said these agreements would open up the possibility for further discussions.The agreements were signed after a meeting Gonzi had with HH the Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, who was on a one-day visit to Malta.Gonzi described the meetings as productive and noted that Malta’s relations with Qatar, which went back some years, were particularly strengthened last year during the Libya crisis, according to Maltese newspaper reports.“We realised that there were a number of common areas where we could co-operate and where Qatar could invest in Malta,” Gonzi said.Gonzi said that a number of initiatives government would be announcing in the coming days and in which the private sector would be asked to participate were also discussed.“We cannot run and we have to remain with our feet on the ground but there is a clear will from the Qatari government to increase their investment in Malta,” Gonzi said.The Emir was accompanied by, among others, HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, HE the Minister of State for International Co-operation Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah, and HE the Minister of Business and Trade Sheikh Jassim bin Abdul Aziz bin Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani.
