The theme this year is ‘sustainable development through engineering.’ The four-day congress is expected to see more than 1,000 participants from India and abroad. It is being organised by the Institute of Engineers (IEI) Delhi state centre, along with the ministry of urban development and the Delhi government. R N Rajput, chairman of the congress and IEI, Delhi state centre, said: “The congress is being organised to provide engineers newer and better horizons to operate in their respective fields of expertise, and a forum to meet and interact with counterparts from other organisations.”Parliament to pay tributes to GujralBoth houses of parliament will be adjourned for the day today after paying tributes to former prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral who died on November 30. Gujral died at a private hospital in Gurgaon, Haryana. He was 92. He was cremated on Saturday in Delhi with full state honours in the presence of the country’s top leadership, including President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He is survived by two sons, Naresh and Vishal, and brother Satish Gujral, a prominent painter and architect. Gujral’s wife Sheila died in 2011. Diplomats from various countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Singapore and Russia, were present at the cremation.Namdhari’s police custody extendedA Delhi court yesterday extended for three more days the police custody of Sukhdev Singh Namdhari, arrested for the murder of Hardeep Singh, the brother of slain liquor baron Ponty Chadha. Namdhari, a witness to the November 17 shootout at a farmhouse in south Delhi in which the brothers were killed, has been booked under Indian Penal Code’s Section 302 (murder) for Hardeep’s killing. Namdhari was sacked as chairman of the Uttarakhand Minorities Commission after the Chadha brothers’ killings. He was arrested from his farmhouse in Uttarakhand on November 23. According to the police, Namdhari killed Hardeep. The pistol used for killing has been seized, they said.Uddhav to meet party workers during tourShiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray yesterday reiterated his resolve to fight for ‘Marathi Manoos’ and ‘Hindutvavaad’. He will soon tour the state to meet party workers. In his first interview in the party mouthpiece Saamna after the death of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, Uddhav said he would not take the place of his father, who was irreplaceable and would stay Shiv Sena supremo. He said the controversy over the memorial to Bal Thackeray at Shivaji Park was unnecessary. The tour will begin in western Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district, where he will meet party workers and elected representatives, whether of local governing bodies or parliament.
