By Sports Reporter/DohaA group of students from the Schools Olympic Programme (SOP) felicitated the Al-Rayyan handball team for winning the 15th Asian Men’s Handball Club Championship 2012 held from November 2 to 15.The function was hosted on the sidelines of the SOP’s sixth edition competitions in handball for the boys preparatory schools held at Abdullah bin Suhaim Hall of Qatar Sports Club on Wednesday. Al-Rayyan Sports Club senior administrator, Ahmed Buti, beside the technical staff members and handball squad attended the function. Following the ceremony, a number of Al-Rayyan handball team members took part in a match between Ali bin Abi Taleb Preparatory School and Khalid Bin Ali School. Ahmed Buti extended appreciation to handball students and SOP organising committee for their tangible contribution in honoring Al-Rayyan Handball team. In this week’s handball fixtures, on Tuesday preparatory schools, Al-Zubara outclassed Al-Hikmah International 1-1, Osama bin Zaid defeated Ummsaieed 9-0 and Birla School thrashed Cairo 3-1 and Palestinian down Al-Furqan 3-2. The SOP is a sporting event involving more than 300 schools and 20,000 participants. It runs from October to April each edition. The theme for the 6th edition of (SOP) being held this year is Sport and Investment. SOP is held annually as a collaborative effort of the Olympic Committee, Supreme Education Council, Qatar School Sport Association and Qatar Paralympics Committee. The programme aims to spread a culture of sports throughout Qatar’s schools and to engage the entire community in active and healthy lifestyles while retaining local values and traditions. The school year 2012-2013 will see the programme explore the theme of ‘Sports and Investment’ via partner Enterprise Qatar, will reinforce the importance of sports and their related investment and business projects.
