Legendary long jumper Bob Beamon is hoping to bring to Qatar a touring exhibition of artwork by Olympian artists. Speaking to Gulf Times on the sidelines of the International Sport Security Conference yesterday, the phenomenal American athlete said he is also exploring the possibility of establishing an Olympic Museum featuring the medals and works of the Olympians and Qatar is one of his choices for its formation, though he refused to elaborate.Though Beamon’s long jump world record was broken 23 years later in the World Athletics by Mike Powell in 1991, his Olympic record of 8.90m remains unbroken all these years after it was set in Mexico in 1968.Asked if he hoped if anyone would break the 9m mark in long jump in near future, Beamon said he is looking forward to such a feat from someone these days. “All records are meant to be broken and the earlier it happens, the better it is for any sport,” he said.Beamon is currently the CEO of Florida-based Art of the Olympians Museum and Gallery at the Al Oerter Center for Excellence, home to Olympic sports and arts.Art of the Olympians is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organisation, dedicated to inspiring creativity and stimulating change through an international programme of art, education and outreach initiatives. Art of the Olympians, it is understood, is dedicated to demonstrating the very real relationship between art and sport to the general public. One of its main intentions is to establish a touring exhibition of artwork by Olympian Artists in order to illustrate this sport-art association and in doing so create a greater understanding on the part of the student of what it takes to succeed in most avenues of life.
