Hamad Medical Corporation will host experts from School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences in Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen -UK, which is one of the premier pharmacy schools in the world and well known for its excellent pharmacy education.During their visits, the experts including Pharmacy Practice Professor Dr Derek Stewart, lecturer Dr Lorna W McHAttie and senior lecturer in e-learning Dr H Lesley Diack, will share their expertise in conducting practice-based pharmacy research with colleagues at the Women’s Hospital as well as providing the best medication protocol and optimum use of resources in any hospital setting.As part of the visit, a two-day pharmacy research workshop developed by the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences was organised under the WH Pharmacy director Dr Moza al-Hail, with some 65 pharmacists from all HMC hospitals participating.“The Pharmacy Research workshop is aimed at motivating and enabling the pharmacist to take part in medical research. It is geared towards imparting knowledge about basic research methodologies, the protocols to be followed and the main focus area in providing better patient care,” Dr Moza said.She said the workshop will help to improve the quality of pharmacy research conducted at HMC which in turn will help the organisation to get international recognition through international publications of its high quality research work.With the role of pharmacist constantly changing, they are now required to be more than just people behind the pharmacy counter. Pharmacists at HMC are expected to follow evidence-based pharmacy practice, which calls on every pharmacist to look at each medicine and prescription and see whether it will lead to better patient care and treatment.“Pharmacy research projects worldwide have revealed that many times there are marked differences in medication protocol suggested by pharmaceutical companies and the one’s advised by doctors. Through practical research in pharmacy, we can find the best medication protocol for the patients,” WH pharmacist Abdul Rouf said.“The pharmacist has to ensure the safety of medication. Its optimal use and cost effectiveness, which benefits any hospital setting in multiple ways,” another pharmacist Wessam el-Kaseem said.The Pharmacy Research workshop was being held in line with HMC’s vision to transform itself into an organisation with premier Academic Health System based on research and education for all.
