By Noimot OlayiwolaDelegations of businessmen from Uruguay’s public and private sectors are likely to visit Qatar next month with plans to meet with their Qatari counterparts and in order to explore investments opportunities between the two countries, it has been learnt.“We have been making efforts for some time now to attract investors from Qatar to Uruguay and in the past few weeks, some businesses from the Uruguayan private sector have met with the Qatar Investment Authority and Qatar Holdings to explore possibilities of co-operating for businesses and investments and also next month, another set of businessmen are coming to see the opportunities on ground here,” Uruguayan ambassador to Qatar Jose Luis Remedi told mediapersons yesterday on the sidelines of a celebration held to mark the country’s National Day at his residence.The National Day celebration was attended by the Minister of Culture HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari and many ambassadors of different countries’ embassies in Qatar.According to him, though there have been no clear prospects for business deals between the two countries yet, and efforts were still to be channelled to convince Qataris to make Uruguay an hub for its future investments in the Latin world.“Uruguay is a very small country with population of around three million and investors may not see the prospects of investing there as they may envisage less consumption or investment turn out, but despite that, we have been speaking to the Qatari authorities to take the advantage of our country’s position as the epicentre of around 250mn people residing mainly in Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil, the countries around Uruguay,” he said. In the opening speech, Remedi urged Uruguayans to view the occasion of National Day as a moment to redouble efforts at strengthening relations and processes.“While National Day celebration should be a moment to put aside our daily tasks to think and reflect, it should also be a non-stop and non-ending event in our lives because it is a day marking the declaration of independence,” he noted.There are some 30 Uruguayans presently resident in Qatar with a good number of them working as engineers and architects.
