By Ramesh MathewThe multi-billion dollar Lusail City Development would provide its 200,000-strong population “lifestyle and standard unmatchable and unseen” in the region when it is ready, a senior official told the Qatar Construction Summit 2011 yesterday.Some of its facilities would be ready by early next year, said Magdy Youssef, director of the Lusail Administrative Complex.Reiterating that the work on the 38sq km project is in full swing, Youssef said the city under construction is “simply much more than an extension” to the fast-developing West Bay suburbs of Doha.Youssef, a town planner, said the city which is divided into 19 district zones would be successful in providing a distinct identity to each of its components. “While the eco-friendly city has both exclusive commercial and residential zones, the township could also boast of mixed zones, combining both residential and commercial features,” he said.According to the official, the marina being made as part of the development would be the largest of its kind, providing berths for 1,000 luxury boats at one time. The city, said Youssef, has more than 30km of water front development, besides offering entertainment and recreational zones, built adhering to the local traditions among others.The place would have close to 50,000 dwellings, which includes residential apartments, independent villas and town homes. The township would have 20mn sq m of gross floor area, spread over 5,175 plots. Media City being planned at the location would be unique in many ways, said the town planner.Youssef said the world-class hotels and other residential accommodations of the city would house more than 9,000 players and other officials of the FIFA expected to descend on Doha during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.The eco-friendly environs of the township would have several pedestrian ways and bicycle tracks.The car parks being built in the city could easily accommodate more than 5,000 cars at one time. “However, the impetus is to promote public transport inside the city and hence a mass transit railway network is under construction. The city would have at least 38 stations within its limits and seven or eight of them would be underground and the remaining stations at the ground level.”Youssef said the rapid mass transit system incorporating such features as metro rail connect the place with the New Doha International Airport in the shortest possible time. The rail being laid in the township would have both local and international links to help its people access city and its outer areas.
