Charice ... Doha-bound
In one of the biggest live entertainment events in Qatar this year, international recording artist and hit TV series Glee star Charice Pempengco will perform to a 15,000-strong crowd on September 29 in Doha.Described as America’s hottest singing sensation, the 19-year-old Filipino singer is to stage a 2-hour concert, her first in Qatar. The event is being presented by Regency Travel and Tours in association with Golden Relations at the warm-up track next to Khalifa Stadium in Aspire Zone.Charice is widely-recognised for her smash-hits songs Pyramid, featuring singer Iyaz, and Before It Explodes, written by Bruno Mars. Born in Laguna, Philippines, she was raised by single mother Raquel. To help support her family, Charice entered singing contests when she was just 7-years-old, from town fiestas in various provinces to singing competitions on TV.In 2005, Charice joined Little Big Star, a talent show in the Philippines, loosely patterned after American Idol. Eliminated after her first performance, she was called back as a wildcard contender and eventually became one of the finalists. Although she was a consistent top scorer in the final rounds, she was only placed third.Charice made minor appearances on local television shows and commercials, but essentially fell off the radar after her stint at Little Big Star. It was not until 2007 that she gained worldwide recognition after an avid supporter under the username FalseVoice, started posting a series of her performance videos on YouTube. These videos received over 15mn hits.It was from YouTube that the US comedienne Ellen DeGeneres discovered Charice and later extended an invitation for the singer to be in her show. The young singer’s appearance in DeGeneres’ programme later caught the attention of Oprah Winfrey. Her appearance on that show pushed up her popularity in the US, especially after the multi-award winning TV host and producer called her “the most talented girl in the world”.Charice has already performed side-by-side with the biggest names in the international music scene such as Celine Dion, David Foster and David Archuleta. She was also cast in the Season 2 of Glee as Sunshine Corazon, an exchange student from the Philippines who presents serious competition to lead character Rachel Berry, played by Lea Michele. Her TV role further enhanced her international popularity.Tareq Abdullatif Taha, CEO of Regency Travel and Tours, emphasised that he was happy to be associated with Golden Relations sponsoring the event. “This is a another stepping stone towards the foundation which was laid two years ago by launching Regency Events which organised a concert for popular Indian singer Sonu Nigaam,” he stated.Tareq Taha added that Regency Travel and Tours along with Regency Events and Golden Relations will bring future concerts and events for different communities in Qatar. “Since announcing the event early last month we have been flooded with enquires via Facebook and on Twitter for more information regarding the show, said Bilal Taha, CEO of Golden Relations. “It took as time to announce the venue as we worked out for a bigger place that can accommodate at least 15,000 people. We are expecting a big turnout since Charice’s followers are not only Filipinos but other nationalities as well.”Tickets are available at all Regency Travel and Tours outlets.
