The Msheireb Downtown project will feature an innovative waste recycling system
Msheireb Properties has awarded a major contract to Swedish company ENVAC AB for the installation of a state-of-the-art automated waste recycling system at the Msheireb Downtown project.“The installation of the processing system reflects Msheireb Properties’ commitment to sustainable development across all its projects and is in line with Qatar’s Vision 2030,” a spokesperson said. The system will be able to handle around 80% of household waste, and will include three vertical chutes to be installed in each residential building with inlets on each floor. The different chutes will handle different materials, such as kitchen refuse, dry recyclable items such as glass, metal and paper, as well as residual waste such as wet paper, clothes and other refuse. The system will use air to suck the waste through a steel pipe network to a collection terminal which can be located as far away as 3km from the initial point of discharge.Commercial, retail and other buildings will also have dedicated inlets and supermarkets and hotels will hold connections to the network.Project director of Msheireb Properties, Mohamed al-Marri said: “The Gulf’s remarkable growth story has also affected the environment to a degree, which is why offsetting the impact of any development is at the heart of Msheireb Properties’ vision.“With this system from ENVAC, combined with an education campaign for all residents, we can ensure Msheireb Downtown is at the forefront of the world’s ‘Green cities’ movement,” he said.“That aspect of education is critical to getting the most out of this system. Recycling, however, still isn’t necessarily upper-most in people’s minds, which is why we in partnership with ENVAC are also putting together a programme which will put in place weekly workshops on how to use ENVAC, as well as organising visits to the collection centre to see how the waste is collected and segregated,” al-Marri said.“We are confident that through education programmes such as these, future residents of Msheireb Downtown will make the neighbourhood’s green credentials a real point of pride,” he added.
