Coming hot on the heels of its successful charity event, Fast-a-thon 2011, Hyatt Plaza shopping mall is planning to launch an extensive campaign to lend a helping hand to the victims of famine-hit Somalia. The campaign, organised in co-operation with the Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF), will encourage people to donate generously through the donation boxes placed at Hyatt Plaza.“During this holy month of sacrifice and philanthropy, Hyatt Plaza would like to channelise the contributions from different sections of society towards supporting the people of Somalia in their struggle against starvation,” said Feroz Moideen, general manager of Hyatt Plaza. The donations will be collected until the end of Ramadan. A photo exhibition is also being organised inside Hyatt Plaza to make people aware of the grim situation in Somalia. “We hope that our humble efforts will provide some relief to the starving children and the desperate people of Somalia,” said Ayed al-Qahtani, chairman of RAF.More than 2,000 people are dying every day in Somalia, as the country experiences its worst drought in decades. Millions are on the brink of starvation.“The situation in Somalia is extremely miserable and disheartening. We believe we should make a conscious effort to help them,” said S M Naseem, marketing consultant of Hyatt Plaza.“We have placed donation boxes in our mall and Hyatt Plaza looks forward to the contributions from everyone to make a significant difference to the people of Somalia,” he added. On August 6, Hyatt Plaza organised Fast-a-thon 2011, in which more than 300 non-Muslims from 19 countries participated to support the humanitarian cause of Somalia. RAF donated QR200 on behalf of each participant. Five of those participants also volunteered to take part in Fast-a-thon Plus, an offshoot of the charity event, and committed themselves to fast for the rest of Ramadan. RAF will donate QR100 to Somalia on their behalf for each day they fast. The donation boxes are placed at Gate No. 5 near Jungle Zone inside Hyatt Plaza. People can also make their donations directly to RAF through different donation channels including SMS and online transfer to the RAF bank account.
