A combination of pictures taken in Doha shows the moon in various stages of a total lunar eclipse last night. The spectacle began at around 9.23pm partially and moved to a total phase at 10.22pm. The total phase ended at 00.03 while the partial stage came to an end at 1.02am. The total eclipse was at its peak at 11.13pm. During the totality of the eclipse, the moon passed through the centre of the earth’s shadow. This was one of the darkest eclipses ever, and for 100 minutes the moon appeared as a dark red orb in the sky. The lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the earth’s shadow and can only happen at full moon. One of the major differences between a lunar and solar eclipse is that a lunar eclipse can be viewed from across the entire night side of the earth. PICTURE: Jayan Orma
