The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) of the Ministry of Interior has seized over 4mn Captagon pills, the largest-ever haul of the banned narcotic drug in Qatar. The DEA also arrested nine members of an Arab drug trafficking gang in an operation that involved meticulous planning and implementation. The seizure and arrests were made after DEA received a tip-off that a consignment of Captagon pills had arrived at Doha port on a cargo ship. After verifying the information and co-ordinating with the General Directorate of Customs, the consignment was monitored and it was found that the drugs were hidden inside heavy equipment. The authorities decided to allow the consignment to be cleared and enter the country so that the security departments could identify the gang members.Soon the DEA formed a team for the operation to capture the members of the trafficking network and those supposed to receive it. The consignment was then allowed to pass through the customs. The suspects were identified while they were receiving the consignment and moving it to a storeroom. The DEA officials raided the place and arrested the traffickers.During the investigation it became evident that the suspects had co-ordinated with another Arab team which was supposed to receive a huge quantity of the pills to take it into a neighbouring country. A trap was laid and the remaining gang members were arrested while receiving the narcotic pills. The accused have been referred to the court. The Ministry of Interior yesterday urged citizens and expatriates to inform the authorities, through contact channels and the website of the DEA reports of suspicious activities related to drugs.
