Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) yesterday organised a function at the Diplomatic Club to observe World Water Day.The United Nations observes March 22 as World Water Day.“Water for cities: responding to the urban challenge” was the theme of a discussion at the function. It was pointed out at the meeting that Qatar was committed to developing its potable water resources to meet the increasing demand efficiently, effectively and systematically. The strategy adopted by Qatar to meet the growing water demand of its population is very much in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, the meeting was told.Qatar has increased the quantum of supply of desalinated water by several times in the last 21 years. While the average generation of desalinated water was only 47mn gallons a day in 1990, now it is about 325mn gallons a day.The current water production, it is generally felt, is enough to meet the actual demand, at least until 2014. The meeting was also informed that Kahramaa was working in tandem with the Ministry of Environment and Qatar National Food Security Programme to find alternative ways to increase the country’s water security through a series of initiatives. The corporation has also carried out some feasibility studies to reduce the costs of generating water on the basis of similar studies done elsewhere in the region and in its immediate neighbourhood, according to Kahramaa officials who made the presentations on the occasion.Efforts are also on in the country to reduce the loss of water as much as possible, the gathering was told. The initiatives being made by the Ministerial Council for Water in the Arab region were also highlighted.
