Dr Saeed al-Kaldari of Qatar has been recognised as one of the top 20 plastic surgeons in the world to perform a rare outer ear reconstruction surgery.
He was recently interviewed on MBC 1 where he described his unique external ear implant procedure.
"Ear anomalies may have both congenital and traumatic causes. In some cases, (one-in-5,000 births) people are born without an external ear. In others, trauma such as a dog bite or a burn can be catastrophic, both physically and psychologically,” he said.
He said the purpose of the reconstruction was to rebuild the external ear so that it looks completely normal.
"This type of surgery is intensive and often involves three stages. In the first one, the cartilage is removed from the patient’s own rib cages to make a framework that resembles their normal external ear. The use of living tissue from a patient means there is less chance of rejection and the cartilage grows with the patient,” he said.
Dr al-Kaldari explained that after the framework is created, it is inserted in a pocket under the skin. "Leftovers from the distorted ear are used to form the lower part of the ear.”
The second operation, according to him, normally takes place after three months.
"This amount of time ensures good blood flow and supply to the transplanted cartilage. During that operation, the doctor takes the skin from the waist to create skin for the new ear.”
In the third phase, he said the previously placed cartilage under the skin gets removed and cosmetic changes are applied - sometimes even to the healthy ear - to make sure that both ears of the patient look identical.
"It is important to note that outer reconstruction does not improve hearing. Instead, it is designed to psychologically support those with facial deformity. It can also be useful for those who wear glasses. The procedure has a very high success rate. The natural elements used in it induce a very quick response from the body,” he said.
Dr al-Kaldari’s lead expertise is in facial reconstructive surgery and his most commonly performed procedures are corrective septo and rhinoplasty (nasal surgery for breathing and deformity), blepharoplasty (eye-lid surgery) and face lift.
His clinic is one of the most advanced in Doha, offering a wide range of cosmetic surgery procedures and treatments for women and men - from aesthetic services such as facials and microdermabrasion to non-surgical procedures such as laser skincare, injectables and fillers as well as cosmetic surgery for face and body.
All procedures are performed by highly qualified specialists, using the latest technology and the most advanced methods.
"The focus is to maintain, restore or enhance one’s appearance in a way that looks as natural as possible and with a minimal downtime,” he said.
Dr al-Kaldari holds a bachelors degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (1997) and a Swedish Board Certification in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2005).
He is also a member of some of the most respectable health-advisory organisations in the field of plastic surgery including the Swedish Plastic Surgery Association, the International Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Association, the Pan-Arab Plastic Surgery Association and the GCC Plastic Surgery Association.
Dr al-Kaldari is also an instructor in Surgery at the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.
Fully recommended by Qatar’s Supreme Council of Health, Dr al-Kaldari is a board certified consultant in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Rumailah Hospital.
His past experience includes plastic surgery consultancy at Malmo University Hospital (Sweden) and the Scandinavian Outer Ear Reconstruction Centre.
