Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation’s (Kahramaa) Awareness park, coming up in Al Thumama area has received Qatar Sustainability Assessment System (QSAS) award.
The award was for meeting all technical specifications and requirements put up by the committee, which was constituted to select the winner, said a Kahramaa communiqué.
The model of the Awareness Park, it said, has achieved 5-star QSAS commercial design certification.
Kahramaa president Issa Hilal al-Kuwari received the award.
The park is in line with the corporation’s commitment to the Qatar National Vision 2030, one of the objectives of which is sustainable environmental development, among others.
The park at Thumama, comes as a positive contribution to the sustainable development of the community, according to the statement.
While aiming to become a model centre for disseminating awareness on the necessity of conserving electricity and water, the park  also demonstrates the complete processes of electricity generation and desalination of water from the sea, it said.
Extremely useful in educating the students at the country’s universities and schools, the park which will be ready for opening in 2013 is expected to form an innovative source of entertainment and leisure space for the consumers, in particular small children.
The park offers infrastructure services for development as it has developed effective measures to minimise obstruction of daylight. It provides landscape that encourages greenery and fights desertification. The park uses solar energy to heat water and a system to treat grey water and it also uses materials that facilitates future reuse or recycling.
The park uses materials that eliminates excessive energy consumption, controls indoor pollutant sources and provides sufficient noise insulation.
At the award ceremony, head of design engineering of water projects department Mohamed Thani al-Maadeed highlighted the outstanding features of the Awareness Park during a presentation.
