A panoramic image of Doha from the exhibition
Under the patronage of Qatar Museums Authority chairperson HE Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad al-Thani, a new exhibition of photos of Doha curated by renowned photographer Maher Attar will be launched at QMA Gallery in Katara on Saturday.
Titled ‘Doharama Photo Exhibition A Portrait of a City,’ the exhibition features 51 images highlighting various landmarks of Doha including Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art, Khalifa Stadium, the Doha Corniche and Education City.
Some rare old photos of Doha will be displayed as well. Images by Maher Attar at the exhibition were taken between 2007 and 2010. Driven by the idea of artistically creating an imaginary past, some of the images are black and white.  These were shot by a Lemography Holga camera and later carefully printed on Fine Art paper to give an impression of authenticity.
On the other hand, the panoramic images at the exhibition were taken by an ultra-high quality 6x17cm Linhof camera.  All images were printed in a professional laboratory and framed in Paris.
On entry to the exhibition, visitors will first go through the panoramic section which features 28 images of Doha.  The next section is dedicated to a short four-minute film featuring the various images on show.
Following that, visitors will have the opportunity to view the images taken by the Holga camera and finally, a special section for old and rare images of Doha from the collection of the Emiri Diwan.
All images on display have been compiled in a special book which is on sale at the gift shop at the Museum of Islamic Art.  The book has been published courtesy of a contribution by Salam International and with the support of the Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari.
Attar has over 28 years of experience with international photo agencies. He has published several high quality photography books including ‘Once upon a time… Souk Waqif’ in 2006. A resident of France since 1990, Attar has been living in Qatar in recent years."Photography bears witness to the fleeting moment. A subtle blend of chance and work. At heart, I am a man of the Orient. For me, openness, respect and trust are the indispensable ingredients of a successful image,” he said.
The exhibition will be open until March 26 from 11am-9pm (Friday 2pm-9pm). Admission is free.
