UCQ students celebrate Qatar Environment Day

The students of the University of Calgary – Qatar (UCQ) undertook a major flower-planting initiative as part celebrating Qatar Environment Day.
The normally dusty, dry beige soil in front of the UCQ campus is now dotted with greens, reds and purples thanks to the 3R Environment Club.
"We wanted to show people that you don’t have to do big things to make the planet greener.  Just something simple like planting flowers can help improve the environment,” club president Reem Vuyock said.
The event attracted a number of other students, faculty and staff at the university. They planted flowers along with a variety of desert flora including a lime tree and Aloe Vera plants.
"The Aloe Vera is connected to health and that’s why we chose it.  We also wanted plants that were indigenous to Qatar and that’s why we selected the cacti,” according to Suzanne Bissada, a biology teacher and faculty adviser to the 3R Club.
