The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has announced the launch of weekly animation workshops aimed at inspiring students and encouraging their creativity through the production of animated films.
Workshops will take place over seven weeks between February 21 and May 6 at the DFI located in Katara, the cultural village, a spokesperson said.
"The marvel of animation will be in full bloom at the animation workshops organised by DFI,” she said, adding: "Themed Animation 101, the weekly workshops are open to ages 17 and above.”
Submission to the programme is open and candidates can apply through the DFI website www.dohafilminstitute.com by February 15.
The workshop will be conducted by DFI mentor, Rahab Elewaly, who will teach 32 students in two groups about the process of creating animated films.
During the course, the aspiring film-makers will make their own short animated films, the spokesperson said, adding: "They will be guided through every aspect of animation film-making, in both individual and group formats, through class screenings and skill development exercises.”
Head of education at DFI, Scandar Copti, said: "Animation and motion capture, the new frontiers in cinema, highlights the evolution of this rapidly-evolving movie technology which has opened doors to new and unlimited possibilities in narration.”
"Animation is what makes characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck universally popular and loved across the barriers of cast, creed, religion, race or nationality and we at DFI are excited to be able to provide Qataris an opportunity to experience the world beyond the obvious and fulfil their artistic and creative aspirations,” he added.
The workshops are scheduled to include sessions on the history of animation, animation types and techniques, developing an animation story, character design and model sheets, storyboarding, key frame drawing and claymation and cutout animation.
