London: Qatar’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Games, Bahiya Mansour al-Hamad ended her Games debut on a subdued note yesterday when she finished at the bottom of the table in the 50m rifle 3 positions competition.Bahiya, who last Saturday became the first Qatari female to take part in an Olympics discipline (10m air rifle), yesterday carded a score of 555 at the Royal Artillery Barracks. The 20-year-old posted scores of 195 (prone), 182 (standing) and 178 (kneeling) in the three categories.American shooter Jamie Lyhnn Gray had a tally of 592 to top the qualification round.Serbia’s Ivana Maksimovic finished the qualifying rounds with a score of 590. Maksimovic finished second on the points table.Russia’s Daria Vdovina was the third best shooter with a tally of 585. A total of 46 shooters took turns at their targets. Qatar shooting official Alnoud al-Naimi yesterday said: “Bahiya has had better days in a shooting range than what we saw today. But the thing I am looking at is that she got the opportunity to shoot with some of the best names in the world. She would be better for it. The Olympic Games have given her a chance to analyse herself as to where she stands.”Al-Naimi added: “Bahiya has two events coming up. One in China (end of September) and in Al Ain (end of November). These two events will give her the chance to show what she picked up at the Games. We are looking at her performances closely. We are confident she would improve her performances after the Games debut.”Today, Qatar’s Rashid al-Athba will be seen in action in the men’s trap qualification at the same venue. Three days ago, al-Athba failed to qualify for the final rounds in the men’s double trap competition. A group of 34 shooters will queue in the qualifying. Spain’s Alberto Fernandez, Britain’s Edward Ling, Guatemala’s Jean Pierre Brol Cardenas and France’s Stephane Clamens are in al-Athba’s group of shooters. Also today, Qatari distance runners Hamza Driouch and Mohamad al-Garni will take part in the semifinals of the men’s 1500m at the Olympic Stadium. Driouch and Al Garni easily qualified for the semifinals after calculated runs in the heats yesterday.Britain take two gold in 20 minutesDorney, England: British rowing won two Olympic gold medals in 20 minutes yesterday when the men’s four beat fierce rivals Australia and the women’s lightweight double shocked even themselves to take the title in thrilling scenes on Dorney Lake. With 30,000 ecstatic fans screaming the popular duo on, Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase sprinted for the line but were left disconsolate when Denmark came through them in the final metres of a 2,000 metre course. Drama then followed as an exhausted Hunter had to be carried out of his boat to lie almost unconscious on the ground before Britain’s most successful rower Steve Redgrave left his position providing punditry for the BBC to pull Hunter to his feet and walk him up and down the pontoon. Despite the disappointment, the haul of four gold medals, two silver and three bronze medals won by the British rowing team make the London 2012 Games the most successful Olympics for a British squad. As things stand, if the national rowing team was a country they would have been eighth in the overall Olympic medal table, behind Italy but ahead of North Korea. “We’d been under a lot of pressure to carry on the coxless four tradition and we’ve done it, this is wonderful,” Britain’s Alex Gregory told the BBC after clambering out of the boat to hug his three team mates. “My son will be able to take the medal into school and say my dad’s an Olympic champion.”
