Amid great fanfare, Qatar Golf Lovers celebrated their 10th anniversary with a golf tournament and a gala dinner at the Doha Golf Club recently. 100 golfers participated in the golf tournament which was sponsored by Ammico Contracting company.A power-point presentation depicting the transformation of QGL from a 8 member group in 2001 to its current standing as the largest golf society in Qatar with 140 members was received by the audience with a thunderous applause. QGL has organised 120 tournaments so far and slides from almost all tournaments and all major events like Ryder Cup etc were included in the presentation. The presentation was organised by Don Blewett, QGL member photographer.Founder members Manoj Megchiani, Pavan Singh and Joe coutinho spoke during the function recollecting memories of QGL’s humble beginning 10 years ago and its phenomenal growth and popularity over the years. Everyone had a word of praise for PK Mathew who has been QGL President for all the 10 years for his dedicated service, leadership and organisational skills. On behalf of all members, Megchiani presented a memento and an all expense-paid golfing vacation in Canada to Mathew. Founder members Sonny Varghese, Suresh Rebello and Moti Shroff also attended function.Meanwhile, Albert Dalton played flawless golf to emerge victorious in flight ‘A’ of the competition in the morning. Keith Senior was the runner-up and Paul Comeau was the second runner-up. Elizabeth Mauvaux was the winner of flight ‘B’ while Dhanraj Kunhiveetil was the runner-up Gray White was the second runner-up.Fazal Kazi won the special prize for Best Gross, Paul Comeau won ‘longest putt’ Clark White won ‘closest to pin’ Tasnim Kazi won ‘closest to rope’ and Valerie Dalton outdrove everyone, mostly men to win the ‘longest drive’ award.QGL also presented ‘Golfer of the Year’ for 2010 – 2011 to Tasnim Kazi for her outstanding achievements and contribution to QGL during the year. Jamal Nasir, Managing Partner of Ammico Contracting company gave away prizes to all winners.QGL secretary Valerie Dalton who is also Head of the Volunteers committee at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters conducted the proceedings of the day with remarkable finesse. Over 150 members & spouses attended the function.
