Gulf Contracting marks 50 years of contributing to Qatar’s development
Gulf Contracting Company (GCC) is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of involvement in Qatar’s construction sector, from its beginnings in prefabricated housing to delivering major projects across the country.
Established in 1976 as Gulf Housing Company through a partnership with Ireland-based McInerney, a specialist in system-built housing, the company initially focused on providing prefabricated accommodation to meet growing demand generated by the expansion of Qatar’s oil industry.
Built on the principles of quality, precision and high standards, the company gradually expanded its operations as demand for construction services increased.
Following McInerney’s departure from the partnership in 1991, Gulf Housing continued as a wholly Qatari-owned company.
In 1996, the company entered into an agreement with UK-based construction major Tilbury Douglas to expand its construction operations, introduce new building methods and standards, and prepare for the future growth of the sector.
The company capitalised on Qatar’s construction boom following the country's selection to host the 2006 Asian Games, establishing itself as one of the leading general contractors in the market.
In 2008, Gulf Housing Company changed its name to Gulf Contracting Company, reflecting its expanding operations and broader construction portfolio.
Over the years, GCC has further strengthened its market presence through subsidiaries Spacemaker, Interspace and Al Manjara Joinery, which operate as established players in their respective sectors.
Its project portfolio spans several segments of Qatar’s construction market and includes prominent developments such as Doha Festival City, the Doha West Sewage Treatment Plant and various civil infrastructure projects in the oil and gas sector.
The company has also received industry recognition for its performance and commitment to safety. It was named Qatari Contractor of the Year by Construction Week in 2017, received a highly commended recognition in 2026 and was named Partner of the Year.
Additionally, GCC has secured several international Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Health and Safety Awards over the past three consecutive years.
The company said these accolades reflect its continued focus on protecting employees and partners while embedding international standards of health, safety and sustainability across its projects.
Commenting on the 50-year milestone, Gulf Contracting general manager, Grahame McCaig said the achievement reflected the company's commitment to the principles on which it was founded.
"Over the past 50 years, Gulf Contracting Company has remained committed to the principles it was founded on — a commitment to quality, precision and delivering high standards. This milestone reflects the quality of our people, our partnerships and our continued focus on delivering the highest standards," he said.
"As we mark this milestone, we remain committed to building on this legacy and contributing to Qatar’s future development," McCaig added.
