Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will take on two-time winners Mumbai Indians in the opening match of India's Women's Premier League (WPL) in January, the country's cricket board said Wednesday.
The fifth edition of the tournament will take place from January 14 to February 7, with the first 11 matches to be played in Vadodara before moving to Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium for the remaining 11 fixtures, including the title clash, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said.
The WPL, first staged in 2023, has delivered the Indian cricket board roughly $700 million in franchise and media rights.
The deals made the WPL the world's second-most valuable women's sports league after WNBA basketball in the United States.
The WPL has rapidly transformed from a regional tournament into a powerful catalyst for global sporting equity. By introducing multi-million-dollar valuations, unprecedented broadcast rights, and professional contracts, the league has shattered historical financial barriers in women’s cricket.
Globally, the WPL serves as a blueprint for commercial viability, proving that elite women’s sports command massive audiences and lucrative corporate sponsorships. Its international draft system bridges talent gaps, allowing players from emerging and established cricket nations to compete side-by-side.
This cross-pollination elevates the tactical quality of the sport worldwide while inspiring a new generation of girls to view cricket as a viable, respected career.
Ultimately, the WPL’s global resonance lies in dismantling outdated gender norms, accelerating the commercialization of women's athletics, and embedding true inclusivity into the modern sports economy.
