Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), under the aegis of the embassy of India, Qatar, celebrated Gandhi Jayanti, commemorating Mahatma Gandhi’s 157th birth anniversary on October 2 at ICC Ashoka Hall. The event featured heartfelt tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, along with cultural performances that reflected the spirit of his life and values.  ICC general secretary Abraham K Joseph welcomed the guests and dignitaries, followed by opening remarks from the ICC head of HR, Admin and Consular, Rakesh Wagh. The chief guest, Indian ambassador Dr K Srikar Reddy addressed the gathering and spoke about Mahatma Gandhi’s values and teachings.  The event was also honoured by the presence of Ashwani Kumar, first secretary, embassy of India, as the guest of honour. Delivering the presidential address, ICC president Manikantan A P spoke about Mahatma Gandhi’s role in India’s freedom struggle and his message of peace and non-violence.  The highlight of the evening was a special Ghazal performance by Padmakumar, a renowned Ghazal and Hindustani singer. His captivating performance added a memorable musical dimension to the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations and was warmly appreciated by the audience.  As part of the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations, ICC organised a series of creative and educational competitions for students from Indian schools in Qatar, encouraging young minds to learn about and reflect on the life, ideals, and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.  The Inter-School Quiz Competition for students of Grades 8 to 12 witnessed enthusiastic participation from 14 schools. The competition focused on Mahatma Gandhi, Indian history and the Indian freedom struggle and was conducted by Manzoor Moideen. The winners were: 1st Prize: Birla Public School, 2nd Prize: Olive International School and 3rd Prize: DPS-Modern Indian School. The Sketch & Painting Competition for students in Grades 8-12 and the Painting Competition for students in Grades 5-7 were held on 2nd October 2026 at Bhavans Public School. The competitions received an overwhelming response, with more than 350 students participating. The winners received trophies and mementoes during the event.  The evening concluded with a vote of thanks by ICC vice president Shantanu Deshpande. The presence of several distinguished dignitaries graced the event, Shanavas Bava – president ICBF; E P Abdurahman – president ISC; Thaha Mohammed – president IBP; and P N Babu Rajan – president, ICC Advisory Council; along with members of the ICC Managing Committee, presidents of associated organisations, and other senior community leaders. The event was hosted by Nazia.
