Qatar enjoyed another productive day at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, winning five medals across shooting, athletics, handball and weightlifting to take its overall tally to 12. The haul comprised three silver and two bronze medals, taking Qatar’s tally to three gold, five silver and four bronze.
Qatar’s latest medals began with silver in the men’s team trap shooting, where Mohammed al-Rumaihi, Saeed Hamad Abu Sharib and Angelo Scalzone finished runners-up with 349 targets. Athletics produced two more medals, with the men’s 4x400m relay team taking silver and Abubaker Abdalla winning bronze in the men’s 800m.
Qatar also secured silver in men’s handball after losing 33-32 to Bahrain in the final, while weightlifter Ouissal Ikhlef claimed bronze in the women’s +86kg category with a total of 273kg.
The five medals added to the seven Qatar had previously secured, as the country continued its campaign across the remaining events in Aichi-Nagoya.
Bahrain edge Qatar in dramatic handball final
Qatar’s handball team had to settle for silver after losing 33-32 to Bahrain in a thrilling final. The result gave Bahrain their first Asian Games handball gold, while Qatar had to be content with silver after winning the title at the previous three editions in Incheon in 2014, Jakarta in 2018 and Hangzhou in 2022.
The final remained closely contested throughout, with the two sides trading goals in the opening stages. Bahrain held a narrow 16-15 lead at half-time. Qatar levelled at 19-19 five minutes into the second half, but Bahrain moved two goals clear at 21-19. Qatar continued to fight back and stayed within one goal at 22-23.
Bahrain then opened a 30-26 lead in the 22nd minute, but Qatar reduced the deficit to 28-30 and then 29-31. The Bahrainis restored a three-goal advantage at 32-29 before Qatar mounted another late fightback to make it 31-32. Qatar came close to levelling in the closing moments, but Bahrain held on for a 33-32 victory.
Shooters claim trap silver
Qatar added another shooting medal at the Asian Games after al-Rumaihi, Abu Sharib and Scalzone won silver in the men’s team trap event. The Qatari trio finished with 349 targets to take second place behind gold medallists Kuwait, while Kazakhstan claimed bronze.
In the women’s team event, Kholoud Hassan al-Khalaf, Ray Bassil and Metha Hamad Albinali finished fourth with 324 targets, one behind Kuwait, who took bronze with 325.
Abu Sharib finished sixth in the men’s individual trap final. Kuwait’s Khaled Almudhaf won gold, with Chinese Taipei’s Yang Kun-Pi taking silver and China’s Qi Ying bronze.
Al-Rumaihi said the team was delighted with the result after a highly competitive contest. "We are delighted to win the silver medal and add another medal to Team Qatar’s tally at the Games. The competition was strong from the first day, and we maintained our focus throughout the rounds to achieve the best possible result. Thankfully, we managed to finish the competition on the podium,” he said.
Abu Sharib said the medal reflected the team’s consistency and concentration. "We are happy with this medal. The competition was strong and required us to maintain a consistent level and a high degree of concentration throughout the three days. Each of us was determined to give his best, and in the end we succeeded in winning the silver medal,” he said.
Impressive Ikhlef wins weightlifting bronze
Qatar’s Ouissal Ikhlef claimed bronze in the women’s +86kg weightlifting category with a total of 273kg. China’s Li Wenwen won gold with 310kg, while South Korea’s Park Hye-jeong took silver with 300kg.
Ikhlef produced a strong performance in a highly competitive field featuring some of Asia’s leading weightlifters. "I am extremely happy with this medal. I consider it one of the most difficult medals I have won in my career because of the strength of the competition and the presence of top-level champions from China and Korea,” she said. "Reaching the Asian Games podium is not easy, so I feel very proud of this achievement.”
She added: "This medal has special value for me because it is my first Asian Games medal, and that is why I consider this bronze medal as good as gold.”
4x400m relay team takes silver, 800m bronze for Abdalla
Qatar won silver in the men’s 4x400m relay after the quartet of Bassem Mohammed, Ismail Abakar, Youssef Abdulaziz Djibrine and Ammar Ibrahim finished second in 3:00.93. The time was their best of the season and earned Qatar another athletics medal at the Games.
Abubaker Abdalla won bronze in the men’s 800m, clocking a personal-best 1:45.25. Qatar’s Hatem Hameed also competed in the final and finished sixth in 1:46.41. Abdalla said he had been targeting gold but was pleased to secure a place on the podium.
"I was aiming for gold, but the competition was extremely tough. I gave everything I had to reach the podium, and thankfully I succeeded in winning bronze. I am proud to raise Qatar’s flag high at this major Asian sporting event,” he said
Volleyball team finish second in group after loss to India
Qatar’s men’s volleyball team finished second in Group C despite losing a marathon five-set battle 3-2 to India.
Qatar won the opening two sets 28-26 and 27-25 and appeared on course for victory, but India fought back to take the third 25-23 and fourth 25-20. The deciding set was another tight contest, with India eventually winning 24-22 to complete the comeback. India incredibly saved nine match points.
Qatar’s second-place finish secured qualification to the quarter-finals, where they will face Japan on Thursday.
Cherif and Tijan reach beach volleyball quarter-finals
Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan advanced to the beach volleyball quarter-finals with a straight-sets victory over Vietnam in the round of 16. The pair won the opening set 21-16 before dominating the second 21-9 to book their place in the last eight. Cherif and Tijan, the defending Asian Games champions, will face Iran in the quarter-finals as they continue their bid to retain the title.
Meanwhile, Qatar second beach volleyball team Mousa al-Khair and Mohammed Ehab were eliminated competition after losing in straight sets to China in the round of 16.
