Qatar National Library (QNL) has opened its heritage collections to people with disabilities through a new Accessible Digital Kiosk that lets visitors touch, read and sign their way through the nation's archives.
QNL describes the kiosk as the first and only device of its kind. It was developed with Mada Assistive Technology Center and funded by the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation (QRDI) Council, the library announced Tuesday.
The kiosk brings more than 100 hand-picked items from the Heritage Library to life in accessible formats, from Braille interfaces to finely detailed tactile reproductions. Some visitors would otherwise find these items hard to access.
For visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing, the kiosk has sign-language content presented by "Bo-Hamad", Mada's Qatari Sign Language avatar. Together, these technologies give visitors a full, multisensory way to experience the library's historical holdings.
"By integrating innovative technology with our historical archives, we are ensuring that all members of our community can experience, learn from, and be inspired by these invaluable collections," she added.
Nada al-Olaqi, Senior Programme Director for Innovation Development and Adoption Programmes at QRDI Council, called the project "a strong example of how collaboration between national institutions and innovators can transform an idea into a practical solution with tangible societal value".
"Through our Open Innovation programme, we are proud to have supported the development and real-world validation of this technology," she said.
"We look forward to seeing its impact extend beyond this initial deployment and contribute to more inclusive experiences in Qatar, across the region, and around the world."
The kiosk is now in place at QNL, a significant step towards putting the nation's cultural heritage within everyone's reach.
