UNHRC holds interactive dialogue on human rights of women, children in conflict and post-conflict situations

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) held an interactive dialogue on the human rights of women and children in conflict and post-conflict situations under Agenda Item 3 during its 63rd session in Geneva, as part of implementing Human Rights Council Resolution 60/19.

HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Dr. Hend Abdulrahman Al Muftah, participated in the interactive dialogue and delivered a statement on behalf of the State of Qatar and the Republic of Costa Rica, both core group members of Resolution 60/19.

Her Excellency noted that the initiative promoted by the interactive dialogue responds to the suffering of millions of women and children affected by armed conflict. She emphasized that it does not merely reaffirm their rights, but also aims to ensure that violations committed against them lead to tangible protection, accountability, justice, and reparation.

Her Excellency explained that women and children in almost all armed conflicts around the world today continue to bear the heaviest burden, facing various forms of violence, killing, displacement, and family separation, among other grave violations. Children in particular are subjected to exploitation, recruitment, and abduction, and are deprived of education, healthcare, and basic protection.

Her Excellency stressed that these violations are exacerbated by the continuous disregard for international human rights law and international humanitarian law, noting that such acts may constitute war crimes or crimes against humanity. Victims often struggle to seek justice due to inadequate protection, insufficient accountability mechanisms, and limited access to effective remedies and reparation.

Her Excellency highlighted the necessity of taking concrete measures to address these issues to protect women and children, expressing her commitment to advancing the implementation of Human Rights Council Resolution 60/19.

HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva called upon parties to armed conflicts to fulfill their obligations, ensure compliance with applicable human rights standards and the rules and principles of international humanitarian law, and guarantee their effective implementation.
