The General Tax Authority (GTA) has announced a new fully digital service that allows eligible taxpayers to request a reduction of financial penalties through the Dhareeba electronic platform, with decisions potentially issued within minutes of submission.The service enables taxpayers to submit financial penalty reduction requests entirely online, with applications processed automatically by the system. According to the GTA, if an applicant meets the approved eligibility criteria, a decision may be issued within minutes, sparing taxpayers the need to visit the Authority's offices in person. The Authority confirmed that the entire process, from submission to decision, takes place through the Dhareeba platform, reflecting its broader push toward paperless, self-service tax administration.Before applying, taxpayers are urged to ensure they meet several preliminary conditions. Applicants must have submitted all required tax returns and paid all outstanding taxes, in addition to satisfying the specific eligibility requirements set for the Financial Penalty Reduction Service. The GTA noted that the service is available to all taxpayers who meet these requirements and that each application is assessed individually against the approved eligibility criteria before a decision is reached.The Authority also outlined important conditions that apply once a request is approved. Taxpayers have 30 days from the date of approval to pay the reduced penalty amount. If payment is not made within this period, the reduction is automatically cancelled, and the penalty reverts to its original amount, meaning applicants who delay payment risk losing the benefit entirely. Additionally, the GTA clarified that only one financial penalty reduction request may be submitted per penalty, leaving no room for repeat applications if a request is rejected or a payment deadline is missed.
