Qatar has recorded a notable achievement at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026), with Qatari student Laith Tuwair receiving an honourable mention at the prestigious international competition held in Shanghai from July 10-21.The event brought together talented young mathematicians from more than 121 countries, placing Qatar’s six-member student team alongside some of the world’s strongest performers in mathematics.The 2026 participation marked Qatar’s second appearance at the IMO, following its debut at the 66th edition in 2025.Tuwair’s honourable mention represents a significant step in Qatar’s participation in one of the world’s most demanding academic competitions.The distinction reflects his ability in mathematical reasoning, analytical thinking and solving non-routine problems, while also highlighting the progress being made in developing Qatari students capable of competing at international standards.The achievement followed an intensive preparation programme conducted over several months, covering advanced areas of Olympiad mathematics and combining specialised academic supervision with systematic training.The programme was designed to strengthen students’ analytical and creative thinking and prepare them to tackle complex mathematical problems under demanding competition conditions.Members of the Qatar delegation demonstrated commitment and discipline throughout the preparation period and during the competition.Their participation included specialised training programmes and preparatory camps aimed at developing problem-solving skills and strengthening their readiness for international-level competition.The IMO is widely regarded as the world’s leading mathematics competition for secondary school students.Its challenging problems are designed to test mathematical insight, creativity and rigorous reasoning rather than routine application of formulas.Participants compete individually, with national teams selected and prepared through specialised programmes in their respective countries.For Qatar, the second consecutive participation in the IMO reflects an expanding focus on identifying and nurturing students with advanced abilities in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines.The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), through its Educational Affairs Sector and the Educational Guidance Department, has emphasised the development of gifted students and providing them with opportunities to compete in major international academic events.The ministry said the Qatari team’s participation was part of broader efforts to identify promising talent, strengthen students’ scientific capabilities and provide specialised preparation aligned with international standards.Such programmes are intended to develop a generation capable of contributing to science, technology, innovation and knowledge-based development.The ministry congratulated Tuwair and all members of the Qatar team, commending their efforts and representing Qatar at the international competition.It also expressed hope that their performance would lay the foundation for further achievements in upcoming international scientific competitions.
