The National Project for Reducing and Controlling the Population of the Invasive Myna Bird in Qatar continues to achieve tangible results in limiting the spread of the invasive species and reducing its potential impact on the country’s ecosystems and biodiversity, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC)’s Wildlife Development Department has announced.
The ministry said the project’s efforts resulted in the capture of 12,844 invasive myna birds between January and July 2026, bringing the total number of birds captured since the launch of the project to 61,999.
The campaign has also expanded its geographical coverage, with 849 cages deployed across 58 locations.
The increased number and wider distribution of cages are aimed at strengthening monitoring and control operations in targeted areas and improving the effectiveness of efforts to manage the bird’s population.
The MoECC said that efforts to combat the invasive myna bird are continuing according to a carefully planned programme designed to limit its spread, protect native species and biodiversity, and maintain the natural balance of ecosystems.
The ministry further explained that the myna bird is considered an invasive species that can place pressure on native species through competition for food resources and nesting sites.
Its presence can also have potential effects on local plants and birds and on the overall ecological balance.
Meanwhile, the Wildlife Development Department continues to carry out monitoring and control operations while expanding the distribution of cages in targeted locations.
